From Seoul to Apple in Singapore: Sol’s Journey Fuelled by Curiosity

September 18, 2025

Sol Kim always knew she wanted to sit at the intersection of creativity, technology, and data. But it was not until she joined the NUS Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSBA) programme that she discovered just how powerful that combination could be.

After graduating in 2021, Sol has been working in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) field at Apple, where she partners with engineers to shape insights for products that reach millions of users globally.

From Seoul to Singapore and now working with one of the world’s most influential tech companies, Sol’s path is a testament to trusting your instincts even when the destination is not fully mapped out.

Why Sol Chose NUS MSBA

Sol’s fascination with the blend of creative thinking and analytical rigour started early. While pursuing her undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Advertising in South Korea, she found herself drawn to both crafting ideas and building the systems that bring them to life.

“I was always fascinated by Mad Men,” Sol shared, referencing the iconic American drama series about 1960s advertising executives. “In a way, using data to shape strategy made me feel like a modern-day Don Draper, just with SQL and Python instead of a typewriter and whiskey”. This innate curiosity to leverage data for strategic insight ultimately led her to Singapore.

The NUS MSBA offered exactly what she was looking for: a multidisciplinary programme that connects data analytics with business impact. Combined with Singapore’s reputation as a global hub for innovation, it was the perfect launchpad for Sol’s career and growth, solidifying her belief in following her passion for data, strategy, and customer insight.

Finding Her Voice on Stage and in Data

One of Sol’s most defining moments in the programme came just two months in when she was selected to emcee the 8th annual NUS Business Analytics Centre Symposium (BACS) at Marina Bay Sands.

“It pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me build confidence that’s stayed with me long after the event. I’ll never forget the moment I returned to emcee again for the 10th anniversary. It was a full-circle experience.” shared Sol.

Her NUS MSBA experience was further enriched by the diversity of her cohort — students from industries like consulting, luxury, engineering, and tech, some with over 20 years of experience. The conversations, collaborations, and cross-cultural exchange turned every classroom into a dynamic learning space.

Building Skills for Impact at Scale

At Apple, Sol works at the cutting edge of data and innovation, helping guide product direction through analytics. She credits NUS MSBA with preparing her for the fast-paced, high-performance environment she’s in today.

“I loved running projects end-to-end from strategy to execution. The NUS MSBA gave me the tools and the confidence to bring data, business, and storytelling together in ways that create real impact. The programme trained me to think strategically, work collaboratively, and communicate insights clearly – skills I use every day.”

From hosting Apple’s annual organisation-wide gala to moderating fireside chats with senior leadership, Sol now steps into the spotlight with confidence, thanks to the opportunities NUS MSBA gave her to lead and grow.

Building a Career, Not Just Landing a Job

Sol did not start the NUS MSBA journey with a clear job title in mind, but she had clarity on what inspired her: data, strategy, and customer insight. That focus helped her build a career with intention.

“My capstone and professional projects exposed me to regional and global work, and challenged me to lead across cultures and time zones. The foundation I built at NUS MSBA keeps me grounded and adaptable.” Sol mentioned.

Her Advice? Trust Your Instincts!

To future NUS MSBA students, Sol offers this advice:

“You don’t need to have everything figured out. What matters is showing up with curiosity, drive, and willingness to grow. The NUS MSBA programme has a way of sharpening your direction, even before you know where it’s heading.”
