NUS–SYNAPXE–IMDA AI Innovation Challenge 2026: Reimagining Healthcare Through AI

Kick Off Session on 29 Jan 2026

The future of healthcare took centre stage at the NUS–SYNAPXE–IMDA AI Innovation Challenge 2026 Finals, where innovation met purpose, and technology met humanity.

In Singapore, where one in four adults aged 40 and above lives with at least one chronic disease, the challenge was clear: how might we rethink healthcare to be more proactive, personalised, and accessible? This year, students from across the nation rose to that challenge, leveraging the power of AI to design solutions that could transform lives.

A Landmark Year of Participation

This year marked the largest edition of the challenge to date, bringing together 880 participants from 18 institutions across Singapore. In a significant first, the competition was also opened to Junior College students, welcoming a new generation of innovators into the AI ecosystem.

From universities and polytechnics to junior colleges, the diversity of participants brought fresh perspectives and bold thinking, reflecting a shared ambition to solve real-world healthcare challenges through technology.

Tackling Healthcare’s Most Pressing Challenges

Centred on chronic disease and preventive care, this year’s challenge explored how emerging technologies, such as Generative AI, Agentic AI, computer vision, and multimodal sensing, can reshape healthcare beyond traditional clinical settings.

Participants tackled two key problem statements:

  • Agentic AI for Patient Empowerment, designing systems that provide proactive, personalised, and empathetic support for individuals managing chronic conditions and caregiving responsibilities
  • AI for Multimodal Remote Health and Wellness Monitoring, enabling continuous, non-contact monitoring of health and wellness indicators beyond clinical environments

Across submissions, teams demonstrated not only technical soundness, but also a deep understanding of patient needs, designing solutions that empower individuals, support caregivers, and extend care into everyday life.

Spotlight on Singapore’s National AI Ambitions

A defining highlight of this year’s challenge was the introduction of the NMLP Special Prize, awarded to teams that demonstrated outstanding use of Singapore’s National Large Language Models, SEA-LION and MERaLiON.

Developed under the National Multimodal Large Language Model Programme, these models represent Singapore’s investment in building sovereign, culturally attuned AI, capable of understanding the region’s diverse languages, contexts, and healthcare needs.

By integrating these models into their solutions, participants showcased how locally developed AI can drive more inclusive, context-aware innovation, particularly in sensitive domains such as healthcare.

🏆 Winners Spotlight

After weeks of development and mentorship, the Top 8 finalist teams took the stage at the Finals, presenting their solutions to a distinguished panel of 8 judges made up of experts across the healthcare and AI industries. Evaluated on business value, creativity, technical soundness, and storytelling, the teams delivered compelling visions for the future of healthcare.

🏆 Champion: ASSURE
Team ASSURE developed AssureCare Suite, an AI-powered home monitoring platform that supports elderly heart patients through voice-enabled daily check-ins, proactive alerts, and coordinated caregiver oversight to enable earlier intervention and continuous care beyond clinical settings.

🥈 1st Runner-up: SilverGait
Team SilverGait developed a multi-modal, agentic AI system that enables early detection and continuous monitoring of frailty in elderly adults, delivering personalised interventions to support proactive, community-based preventive care.

🥉 2nd Runner-up: Med-SEAL

Team Med-SEAL developed an AI-powered diagnostic support platform that streamlines clinical workflows while empowering patients with clear, culturally relevant insights; enabling more proactive, coordinated, and patient-centred care.

🌟 NMLP Special Prize: Wait For A Name
Team Wait For A Name developed VitalSense, a privacy-first, multimodal AI platform that enables rapid, accessible health screening using everyday devices; supporting early risk awareness beyond traditional clinical settings.

From Ideas to Impact

The Innovation Challenge was more than a competition, it was a journey of exploration, collaboration, and growth.

Through mentorship from industry experts and guidance from experienced practitioners, participants refined their ideas into solutions with real-world potential. Many teams went beyond conceptual thinking, grounding their solutions in practical use cases and user needs, bringing them one step closer to creating real impact.

As the finalists took the stage, their presentations reflected not just technical excellence, but a shared commitment to building a better, more inclusive healthcare future.

A Collective Effort

This year’s challenge would not have been possible without the strong partnership between academia, industry, and the public sector.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to IMDA and Synapxe for their invaluable support and collaboration in bringing this challenge to life. Their shared vision and commitment to advancing AI and digital health in Singapore have provided students with a meaningful platform to innovate, experiment, and create solutions that matter.

Together, these partnerships continue to play a vital role in nurturing future talent and shaping Singapore’s healthcare and AI landscape.

Building the Future of Healthcare

As the NUS–SYNAPXE–IMDA AI Innovation Challenge 2026 comes to a close, it leaves behind more than winning solutions; it leaves behind momentum.

Momentum to rethink healthcare, momentum to push the boundaries of AI, and momentum to empower the next generation of innovators.

The future of healthcare is not just something we imagine, it is something we build, together.
